Sophy King

MA Fine Art

Sophy King is a multidisciplinary artist looking at theintersection between human activity and the environment.

Her practice considers the concept of the anthropocene and deep and shallow time. She is searching for an understanding of ecological systems, processes and phenomena in relationship to social concerns about the climate crisis.

Her work explores the tension between control and chaos inherent in our interventions in the landscape; questioning the dysfunctional nature of the relationship we have with our environment.

She works with maps, walking, photography, drawing, sculpture and installation.

Her focus during the MA has been on the peat moorlands and lowland peat bogs around Manchester; investigating their social, economic, political and ecological context through conversation with geologists, ecologists and conservationists; working with materials sourced from these locations.
