Ian Lowey

My practice is focused on the supermarket as an exemplar of the kind of homogenised, transient, highly-controlled space which has been defined as 'non place' by the French anthropologist, Marc Augé, and others. In particular, I am interested in examining the stage-managed nature of the experience offered by the modern supermarket and at ways in which the subtle (or not so) manipulation of consumer behaviour within this environment can be subverted through the adoption of seemingly 'irrational' logics.

My professional background is in print publishing where I operate as both a writer and an editorial designer. Between 2003 and 2012 I was the co-publisher / editor of the internationally distributed indie arts and culture magazine, Nude. More recently, I co-wrote and undertook editorial design duties on the book, The Graphic Art of the Underground: A Countercultural History which was published by Bloomsbury in Sept 2014.
