MA Contemporary Curating

Abigail Hayler

I am significantly interested in the relationship between audiences and events and exhibitions, and the various new and creative methods of communication between the two such as through innovative designs and unique experiences. Wanting to explore this further, I enrolled onto the university's MA Contemporary Curating course and conducted a live project.

As the project's sole member, I coordinated the event from conception to completion, being the curator, communications, and logistics coordinator. The project entitled Visions of Immigration: Sculpting the Mosaic featured international artists collected from an international open call (where information can be found here), encouraging artists to explore their lived or imagined experiences in relation to the subject of immigration. This topic was explored due to my time as an Events Executive for an immigration training company where I encountered inspiring stories from event attendees regarding their immigration experience, later approaching the company to secure sponsorship, which was successful. Ultimately, the exhibition was a great success and enabled artists to communicate their artistic talents whilst creating a space to discuss such an important topic.

From participating in a wide variety of community engagement activities, I thrive in the planning and management of projects and in the relationships involved in their creation, finding myself motivated by the enjoyment of others in the experiences I create.  My ambition for the future is to continue to curate exhibitions and events as an independent curator and welcome inquiries and concepts from artist/s or otherwise to create a platform for them.
