In recent years society and politics have become increasingly divided. Polarised ‘us vs them’ narratives are taking hold, social media bubbles keep people within echo chambers, and media outlets play to people’s prejudices with fake news. In this climate, critical thinking is desperately needed.
Starting from the premise that visual illustration can help people to grasp abstract concepts, my practice explores how design can be used to encourage people to think critically. I’ve created a series of games and puzzles that invite the viewer to become an active participant in this visual lesson. Using optical illusions, visual play, trickery and metaphor, my work challenges the viewer to think more deeply about how they think.
