Edward Smith
MA/MSc Design: Product and Furniture
Edward Smith, designer and maker living and working in Manchester. His current practice focuses on working closely with manufacturers and craftspeople to create furniture and products. Using an explorative material driven approach to design allows Edward to develop new insights into manufacturing processes.
From the beginning of the MA program Edward’s focus has been the celebration of materials and their manufacture in their purest form, whilst developing a deeper knowledge of these materials, in particular, casting and mould making in a variety of materials. From the outset, he wished to challenge his practice as a designer maker. His interest lies in how the making process creates characteristics of individuality when utilizing production processes that are scalable.
Edward presents a range of table lights that bring the elemental materials; glass, ceramic and bronze together, these interact in a very direct way in the use of bindings to draw and hold these forms together.
