Textile waste is a great concern for me and as a designer and maker I am locating my work firmly within sustainable practice, addressing the issue of waste and trying to consider end of life of the products I make. Old clothing and fabrics appeal to me because of the history they hold, they have a past and the signs of wear and tear prove that they have been used, traces of the wearers and users remain within them. My use of darned and patched elements on new clothing aims to elevate humble techniques and give them a higher value so that when applied to older, worn clothing they may be recognised as something to be proud of and a celebration of the life of the garment. The work considers the connections between fabric in the winter of its life and the natural landscape during wintertime and explores the beauty of the degradation and damage occurring in our environment during this time of year. The colour palette is heavily influenced by colours that are apparent in nature throughout the season, highlighting the beauty in worn and faded cloth.
