My work explores the intersection between design and music by looking at how the tools we use in our creative practice influence its final outcome. Through interface design and experience design I look at electronic instruments as tools for playing and exploring sound. As tools, they suggest the way they are supposed to be used based on the way they are designed and laid out. I examine and reassess these suggestions, and provide new ones in the form of an electronic instrument based on my personal ideas about playing.
Acoustic instruments have a long and rich tradition; their interface is inherently rooted in materials and their properties.
Electronic instruments, on the other hand, are blank slates; their interfaces are arbitrary. Although they mostly reference acoustic instruments or laboratory equipment, those are design choices, rather than functional necessities.
By rethinking an electronic instrument; a tool I use, I showcase the power of design thinking to make us question the design of other tools and systems and change them.
