With colour, mark and facture foregrounded as principle concerns, these paintings say what is needed in the painting process. Such knowledge is balanced by a sought after space of not knowing, encouraging the work to slip in and out of non-representation to achieve aura and suggestion. By investigating decision-making within painterly activity, this work draws on theories of transitional phenomena and potentiality with a view to understanding the directions taken by the painter in the act of painting.
