James McCann
Through out James’ studies at The Manchester School of Art, James has been researching in to Interventions in design, requiring in depth knowledge of materiality and process in order to design in room for serendipity to occur.
The material James has chosen to work with is mild steel and the process the intervention has been introduced to is CNC plasma cutting. The finished form is partly determined by the steel’s reaction to the process of plasma cutting and, by designing the intervention in to the CNC cutting process, how the results of the finish can vary, dependant on a range of factors including speed of cut, power of cut and the thickness of the steel
For James' project, the choice of products has been born from the process and act as a platform to communicate the materiality and process of plasma cutting steel, rather than an expression of the designer.
