As a commercial Interior Designer, I have seen a huge shift in office design to accommodate workers habits. This user-defined design philosophy is not, however, apparent when it comes to housing design in the UK.
Fuelled by my frustration at this disparity, I have used my MA to observe behaviour within domestic interiors, with the kitchen table as the focus.
Researching notions of flexibility and emotional value, I have proposed a concept for a customisable table. The user defines the arrangement and application of the table and its components; the material surfaces have the potential to accumulate marks over time to create a unique finish that is highly personal, recording and celebrating the traces of everyday life.
I want to challenge the way British homes are designed and valued, by shifting the emphasis away from the appearance of the external structure and towards the experience of the interior space.
