Throughout the year, I have been working on a design project based along the Kent River and the surrounding valleys. As an international student I have faced the challenge of improving a landscape existing within and adjacent to the Lake District national park. It has been particularly challenging to understand the complex relationships that have formed through the continuous management of the land through the use of agriculture. It is from this that I believed that the main focus of this project should be to enhance the quality of life for farmers while also strengthening the relationship between ecosystems, their services and economics. Forward thinking concepts that focus on the enhancement of the environment with an economic undertone have lead to an interesting exploration of the land and it's capacity for opportunities in these unfavourable areas. The 'Healthy Valley' focuses on the organic farming of produce, livestock and fish using the hills, salt marsh lowlands and wetlands respectively.
