Having previously trained as a ceramicist, I am interested in using ceramics in jewellery design.
I believe ceramics is somewhat understated in jewellery. As a material it offers a fascinating palette of surfaces and colours that is rarely explored in the jewellery context.
Ceramics is essentially a hard and fragile material and for jewellery purposes it cannot be used entirely on its own, so the pieces I make are always in mixed media. That creates even more interesting design possibilities.
I try to keep an open mind for materials and processes and be creative and innovative in combining them. My current collection features both traditional ceramic and metalwork techniques and cutting edge processes such as laser cutting and engraving. Inspiration for this line of jewellery comes from architecture and reflections of environment in architecture. I am fascinated by the way sky is reflected in see-through glass panels, creating a layering of angular geometric grids and soft natural curves. In this body of work I explore joining together shapes in contrasting materials including ceramic, plastics and metal, trying to recreate that sense of layering.
