Rebecca Kenyon
My current work stems from my experience of living in Mexico City for a number of years where I became fascinated by the clash of two cultures (Aztec and Spanish) that occurred during the colonial period from 1519 onwards. I have created a body of work that focuses on the importance of the decorative as a means of cultural survival, and utilized screen printing as a way of illustrating the layering of these very distinct cultures.
Though my collaged pieces I hope to create a gestalt impression of the city today which reflects and celebrates the hybrid nature of its aesthetic.
I hope to develop my practice further through investigating alternative ideas around cross cultural transference and the role of the decorative within this.
