I believe in responsive design that is grounded in meaning, history and place. These are spaces designed for social interaction, community use, or shared public spaces. Spaces can be interior or exterior, or the boundaries and journeys surrounding them.
With emphasis on thresholds, movement and dwelling, I strive to create environments that encourage an investment of time and a sense of enquiry or promote activity.
This is evident with my project work in Alsager where consultation with local residents resulted in an overarching theme of performance and the need for the creation of a place that the people of Alsager could use for live events. Incorporating a performance space with spotlight, my design includes a stacked granite wall seat that encloses a dais, which takes reference from a traditional bandstand. The seating allows the audience an opportunity to engage and dwell in the space, while three adult trees have been included to enhance the sense of enclosure.
An extra level of detail is added through seven themed bronze elements that were created through a series of workshops with 3 schools in Alsager. These have been set into the feature wall/seat, creating tactile integrated art that has a personal connection and narrative for Alsager. The legacy of this design process will only really become apparent when it is occupied and activated by the community.
I am also involved in smaller installations, although differing in scale, permanence and materiality; they share themes of enquiry and create an opportunity to have a shared experience, which relies on human occupancy and interaction.
