Brunswick is a council housing estate on the eastside of Chorlton on Medlock. The series of photographs, The estate, focuses on the social housing and urban planning of the area and the sub-standard housing issues that have arisen through the neglect of the buildings since its development.

The estate was originally built in 1969 to house the population over-spill due to the slum clearance within the area after the Second World War blitz. The destruction of area gave council architects the opportunity to establish "The City of Manchester plan 1945". The aim of this post war clearance and reconstruction included clearing existing housing along Oxford Road to create new academic and cultural hub. The 1945 plan was described by the city's architect as a seed of cultural renaissance.

After several complaints by the residents, a report was issued 1995 by the Manchester City Council (MCC) on their concern on the condition of the estate. Stating that the estate had a lost community identity and was in need of urgent repair and modernization, and again in 2005 stating a number of key regeneration plans. The aim is to support local economic growth of the city and transform local communities. Significant re-development of the estate and renewed urban planning of the area is desperately needed.

17 years after the MCC report on the condition of the estate work will finally commence in September 2013.
