Alison Roberts
Having a creative break for over 18years, the MA has provided me with an opportunity to re-establish my working practice, bring it up to date and contextualize it. Predominantly an embroiderer, I now work as a gardener, so it is no surprise that timeless herbaceous borders, traditional flora and quintessential Englishness have all been my main source of inspiration.
Observational drawing is a very important part of my practice. Capturing expression and character has been fundamental to my image making. 'Drawing is my tool to find character'. During the final stages of my MA, I have gone on to develop 'surface pattern' designs that incorporate drawings, stitch and embellishment.
Celebrating the delicious scents and vibrant colours of our English cottage garden entwined with the mischievous character of rabbits I have produced a lively body of work, suitable for both the design and creative arts market. I have enjoyed working with Photoshop and digital print, developing my drawings and photographs, into a sample design collection suitable for the fashion and home furnishings market, as well as one-off pieces of Textiles.
